Village History. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The Village of Cahokia is located in the south-central portion of Illinois along the Mississippi River across from the St. Louis central business district.    It is traversed by Illinois Highways Route 3, Route 157 and Interstate-255.

The Village of Cahokia "Birthplace of the Midwest", had its beginning in May of 1699 with the founding of the Holy Family Mission by missionaries from Quebec, Canada. The Church of the Holy Family, Nicholas Jarrot Mansion, and the Cahokia Courthouse are listed in the National Register of Historic places.  The Village was incorporated as a municipality under an Illinois State Charter on March 28th, 1927.

The Village contains over eleven (11) square miles within its corporate boundaries and is a community of approximately 18,900 residents.

Within the boundaries of Cahokia is Bi-State/Parks Airport.  Originally built in 1929, it is now the second largest airport in the St. Louis Metropolitan area and the third largest in Illinois.

The majority of development in Cahokia is and has been residential.  Commercial development is mainly of two types;  Strip Commercial and Shopping Centers, both located along the major arteries of the village.

Village residents who wish to participate, have a wide variety of social and service organizations from which to choose.  Churches covering all major denominations are also available.

The Village offers many recreational activities for the entire family.  These include the Village Park, Olympic size swimming pool, with diving well, ice skating rink (soccer facility), and golf course, plus the Cahokia Youth Center with its various activities.

Cahokia is a Village governed under a trustee form of government, which includes a Mayor, six Trustee's and a Clerk. The Mayor and Clerk are elected at large. Trustees are elected, one from each of six (6) districts.
